Katie Kolpin-Gustafson

Katie Kolpin-Gustafson grew up in River Falls and graduated from River Falls High School in 2001.  Katie earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Food Science/Natural Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2006.  She earned her Master’s of Science in Food Science from Oregon State University a short time later in 2008.

During Katie’s high school athletic career, she earned Varsity Letters in Track (4), Gymnastics (3), and Cross Country (2).  She truly loved athletics, but her favorite season was Track and Field.   Katie competed in many indoor and outdoor events in Track and Field including the 55 meter dash, the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 200 meter hurdles, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 4x100 meter relay, 4x200 meter relay, 4x400 meter relay, 300 meter hurdles, 400 meter hurdles, Long Jump, and Pole vault.  By the time she graduated, she and relay teams she had been a member of held 14 separate school records.

As of 2014, Katie still holds the school records in 6 events including the outdoor 400 meter dash, the indoor 55 meter dash, the indoor 200 meter low hurdles, the indoor 400 meter dash, the indoor 800 meter run and the indoor 4x400 meter relay.  Katie also still holds the Big Rivers Conference record in the outdoor 400 meter dash. 

Katie raced in the WIAA Divison 1 State Track and field meet all 4 years that she was in high school.  She raced the 400m dash every year and placed 3rd (1999), 2nd (1998), and 1st (2001).  Katie also raced the 200m dash (1998, and 1999) and the 4x400 meter relay (2000 and 2001). 

Katie was voted the River Falls Track and Field team’s Most Valuable Player in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 by her teammates. 

Katie was a varsity member of the River Falls Gymnastics team where she competed in the Division 2 WIAA State meet in 1998, 2000, and 2001.  She was named co-team captain in 2001.  Katie also competed as a varsity member of the River Falls Cross Country team in 1998 and 2000. 

Kolpin-Gustafson earned a Divison 1 athletic scholarship with the Wisconsin Badgers after High School, and Katie continued her athletic success as a Varsity member of the University of Wisconsin—Madison Women’s Track and Field team.  At Wisconsin, Katie earned 3 varsity letters in Track and Field.  During her career at Madison, Katie competed in the 600 meter run, the 800m run, and the Distance Medley Relay (DMR).  She earned Second Team All Big-10 in the DMR (2002), and provisionally qualified for the Division 1 NCAA meet in the DMR (2003).  She also competed in the Big-10 Championships in the 800 (2002, 2003, 2004), and the DMR (2002, 2004).  

Katie is married to Will Gustafson of Corvallis, Oregon, who was a rower for Oregon State University.  Katie is currently employed as a Senior Scientist in Research and Development at Land O’Lakes Inc., and she and her husband currently live in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
